Porque si nos fijamos, a mi parecer, que no decimos bien cuando
afirmamos que en Galicia se mide el trigo por el ferrado, pues lo que
m?s quiz? est? en uso es verdaderamente el medio ferrado; ?ste es el
que de ordinario'se emplea, aunque el ferrado sea la medida porque
se cuenta. Son was, inmensamente m?s, los ejemplares que hay en
Galicia de rnedio ferrado que los que llevan un ferrado entero. Y no
digamos nada del uso, porque no admite comparaci?n. En casa de mis
padres, y lo mismo en muchfsimas m?s, hab?a medios ferrados, pero
ferrados no. El ferrado resulta grande; el medic) es inas manejable.
Y si no viene el ferrad? desde aquellos primeros tiernpos, ?podrfan
decirme mis lectures cuand? empez? a usarse? Porque no es obra . de
los Reyes Cat?licos, que tantas cosas ordenaron en Galicia; no procede
de los tiempos ?le la Reconquista, que bastante ten?an que hater nues
tros abuelos en guerrear contra los moros, para expulsarlos de ella y
del recto de Espana, a lo que contribuyeron en primera fila (1); no naci?
con la invasi?n de los b?rbaros, porque ?stos tomaban lo que se le an
tojaba sin tomarse la molestia de medirlo; no de la invasi?n romana,

Y esto explica el enorm? desbarajuste que reina en esta singular
medida. La libra se separa notabiemente de la que se usa por regla
general en Castilla y en todo el recto de Espana, pero es ?nica, puede
decirse, en Galicia, tiene en todas partes veinte onzas (2) y los dos o
tres gramos que separan, por ejemplo, la de la Coruna de ht de Ponte
vedra, bien pudieran pacer de los ejemplares que us? la Comisi?n del
Instituto Geogr?fico y Estadfstico, para deducir su equivalencia, y la
distancia explica tambi?n esa peque?a diferencia. ?Pero el ferrado! El
ferrado no s?lo discrepa de las medidas que se emplean en el .recto de
Espana para medir los granos, sin? que apelias conviene, no digo el
de una provincia y otra, pero ni siquiera el de un pueblo y otro pueblo,
el de una`villa y otra villa, a veces pr?ximas y cercanas. No los he
contado, y es un estudio que debfa estar hectic), pero pienso no bajan
de dos docenas los ferrados que en Galicia se usa?.para medir sus gra
nos. Y hay ferrado para el trigo, y ferrado distinto para el mafz. ?Si
hasta hay casas, si hay foros que tienen (3) su ferrado especial!
