nos liable, entre otras, de un modio usado en Egipto que pesaba cuaren

pese tant? el trigo que`lleva. Y en Roma, en la mime Roma,' sabemos
por el testimonio irrefutable de Galeno, que usaban, a lo menos, los m?
dicos, muy diferentes pesos. L?ase su obra de .Compositione tnedica?
menttorum? y no nos quedar? dude de ello. Oigamos siquiera estas
brev?simas palabras del cap?tulo XVI del expresado libro, que hacen
extensivo a todo el imperio romano lo que venimos afirmandoi Ex quo
romani imperare ?orbi coeperunt, nomen sextant, apud omnes, qua grcca
lingua utuntur, nationes, existit, ipsa vero mensura romance aqualis non
est, quipe alii aliam mensuram usurpant. ?Desde que los romanos empeza
ron a dominar el mundo, todas las naciones que usan la lingua griega'
hablan de sextario, pero la medila no es igual a la romana, pues unos le
dan una capacidad y otros otra diferente.?
A la verdad, acostumbrados nosotros a la uniformidad que buscan
los gobiernos de nuestros tiempos que nos quieren vestir a todos con
el mismo uniforme, f?cilmente pensamos que lo mismo acontec?a en
Roma; que llevaba ella tambi?n sus leyes y sus artes y su lengua y
sus medidas de su confin al otro confin de su imperio. Pero bien con
siderado esto, parece quo no sucedi? as?. Su leugua se extendi?,' es
verdad, por Europa, pero no puso en ello el ernpetio quo pone, por
ejemplo, Alemania en hacer que hablen alem?? la Alsacia y Lorene
que separ? de Francia, ni el que pone esta naci?n en asimilarse Argelia.
No hablaban, en verdad, los hombres de Roma la lengua de los b?rba
ros, fuera eso una verg?enza inconfesable, pero dejaban que ellos la
hablasen librernente. Lo mismo asegura a cerca de las artes Augusto
Choisy en el pr?log? que puso 'a su obra ?L' Art de batir chez les
Byzantins.? No lleg?, dice, jam?s Roma, a pesar de su esp?ritu centra
lizador, a establee?r in unidad en los m?todos del arte, como no lo con
sigui? tampoco en los procedimientos del lenguaje (3). Y si esto suce
