En el ??o 1833 fu6 destinado de Fiscal de Hacienda a Ia Isla
de Cuba. Y en este cargo (al que podemos calificar de muy deli
cado, puesto que era important?simo al par pie muy dif?cil su
desempe?o) se "port() tan a : maravilla V?zquez Queipo, que el In
tendente general de la Isla (1) ?no encontraba frases bastante ex
presivas para ensalzar sus servicios y merecimientos? .
Habiendo regresado a Espana, fu? elegido Diputado a Cortes
el ailo de 1846, y en aquella legislatura pron?nci? algunos dis
cursos de orden administrativo ?tan juiciosamente meditados y ra
zonados?, que llamaron poderosamente la atenci?n del Congreso,
y encantaron de tal manera al ministro de Gobernaci?n (2), que
Ie nombr? Subsecretario de aquel Departamento. Aunque . esta
Subsecretar?a no era del agrado ni de las aficiones de V?zquez
Queipo, acept?la por delicadeza; y a su ejemplar desempe?o se
dedic? con toda diligencia por espacio de tres a?os, transcurridos
los cuales pas? de nuevo a la isla de Cuba con el honroso y ele
vado cargo de Director general del Ministerio de Ultramar. Y
all? ?en aquel puesto, para 61 de honor y compromiso, mucho m?s
que de utilidad o ventaja por ning?n concepto permaneci? otros
tres a?os, con gran beneficio del pals, habituado ya por entonces
a contarle en el n?mero de sus m?s preclaros hijos y servidores
probos de mayor previsi?n y prudencia? (3).
En 1868, a la ca?da de Isabel II, nuestro sabio retir?se por
completo de la pol?tica, y los restantes a?os de su preciosa vida
dedic?los por entero al profundo y sereno estudio de varias cien
cias, a diversas tareas cient?ficas y a pr?cticas de la piedad m?s
acendrada.
Los merecimientos de V?zquez Queipo eran muy relevantes y
notorios, por eso no pudieron menos de ser recompensados con ho
nor?ficos ; cargos p?blicos, distinciones gloriosas y altos honores,
que se acumularon, oomo a porf?a sobre su venerable cabeza. Y
as?, adem?s de Diputado a Cortes y Senator vifalicio, fu? Caballero
Gran Cruz de la Orden de Isabel la Cat?lica. Caballero de la de
Carlos III, Secretario de Su Majestad, Ministro honorario del Tri
bunal Supremo de Guerra y Marina ,y del Tribunal Mayor del
