tanto, includable, y aunque es pequefla la diferencia de dos mil?metros,
?sta se agranda cuando ese n?mero se lleva al cubo. Hecha la opera
ci?n se ve que al segundo n?mero le faltan solo 31 c3 para igualar los
26 litros, pero al primero le faltan 568, es decir, m?s de medio litro.
IT?nto aument? aquella peque??s?ma diferencia 3e dos mil?metros!
Y precisamente por el grande aumento que una peque?a variaci?n
produce en un n?mero cuando se eleva al cubo, sostiene Hussey que
no se debe buscar la capacidad de las medidas romanas partiendo del
pi?, sin? del congio farnesiano que nos es (3) conocido, y parece que no
le falta raz?n, porque si no nos consta de un modo includable que esas
medidas proced?an del pi?, ?porqu? nos hem?s de empe?ar en sos
tenerlo? Teniendo, dice, una medida de capacidad en relaci?n con el
modio parece m?s justo acudir a ella. Pero nos, encontramos, como
hemos notado en un art?culo anterior, que los sabios tnismos que lo
han medido no est?n conformes en su capacidad. Hasse hall? que
dicho congio lleva 3,37 litros, y Auzuot, que lo midi? tambi?n con dili
genera, nos asegura que no Ileva sin 6 3,33. Seg?n la primera medida
al modio le corresponder?an 8,9760 litros. Por la segunda no llevar?a
sino 8,88, ambas superiores a lo que comunmente se le di?, pero muy
inferiores a lo que contiene el nuestro. De suerte, que no nos falta,
come dijimos, alguna raz?n para dudar de la equivalencia dada hasta
hoy al m?dio romano.
Y si no parece desatendible lo indicado por Hussey cuando
apenas conoc?amos otra medida romana de capacidad que el celebrado
congio farnesiano que se guarda actualmente en el museo de Dresde,
mucho m?s parece debe valor hey que tenemos un , modio roman() de
indudable autenticidad cuya medida nos dice, mdjor que ninguna clase
de consideraciones y raciocinios, lo que en el modio romano cabia y
